GRASAC GKS Workshop

with Ruth Phillips (Canada Research Chair in Modern Culture, Art History) and Lisa Truong, Carleton University

Saturday 4 May @ 1:30 pm RB 2220

The Great Lakes Research Alliance for the Study of Aboriginal Arts and Cultures (GRASAC) is an international collaboration of researchers based in universities, museums and Aboriginal communities working together to digitally reunite Great Lakes heritage that is currently scattered in many museums and archives. The GRASAC Knowledge Sharing System (GKS) is an innovative, multidisciplinary database that contains research by GRASAC’s indigenous and non-indigenous experts and promotes the interrelationship of images, texts and audio components that have become scattered to different international repositories through past conventions of collecting and archiving. The workshop will be a demonstration of the GRASAC GKS and a discussion of our future developments in integrating language materials into our database.

Digital Audio in Research and Creation Workshop

with Paul Théberge, Carleton University

Saturday 4 May @ 1:30 pm RB 2228

The history of computing and music is a long one, extending back over half a century of experimentation, creation and research.  In this workshop I want to first explore some of the historical roots of early attempts to combine digital technologies and music making, especially in the realm of music composition — avant-garde, academic and popular — and in sound recording.  I will then survey some of the ways in which digital technologies have come to play a broader role not only in the creation of music, but also in research as well, providing new tools for the visualization and analysis of music/sound, for storage and dissemination, and for use in interactive media such as gaming.
